I watched some Marion Auvin’s short animations from Vimeo this week , they always carry simple topics. She has excellent drawing skill and ability of manage timing. Especially how she timing character, which I think make her drawing coming alive. Watching my last animation for Children Society, even if I put as many as in betweens to make acting smooth but it still looks not very animatic. I think it because the timing is too equal.
I have been searching short animation film which has simple concept and story timeline but make a last impression. Lucky you is a 3D animation about 3mins, it tells a simple and sort of common topic- relationship. There are many crazy moments in this film but it makes a strong connection and conversation with audience through actings and music. Two characters have such different personalities we can see that from their opposite reactions when they facing problem. And that all build up by their actings.
This is another piece by the same sound designer. Very similar style of character design. But tis is the first animation I have seen about gay love. It is so simple, but so touched. All facial expressions tell me whats going on in his head.
I started my graduation film with researching different animators’ work, I would like investgate what can I do within 3 mins. What’s kind of story can be explain clearly and how to explain within3= 3 mins.
Before Summer break, Shuan has showed us an amazing short animation Wind by Robert Loebel. This specific film inspired me a lot. It tells an interesting story and also show excellent animation techniques. I did some research about animator and his inspiration of Wind.
I also watched another his animation which is mush simpler but really good at timing. I watched it and analyse some movement, that I think is really helpful for my further work.
This link is gave by a friend, who is working in film industry and someone he knows made this ad by stop motion animation. And he said this piece of stop-motion animation can be thought as a good quality work at least in China, because most clients would not choose stop-motion to do their ad. I watched this animation, the background looks nice I really like it, but i am not sure about lip sync and body acting, they looks very rough. It seems like they spent most of time on making models. I understand that if client doesn’t want put a lot money into this then it cannot be perfect, it isn’t totally animator’s fault. I think it is the biggest problem for Chinese stop-motion animation.
I found Patrick Bokanowski’s film DVD in library, I have been watching his short films. His film combines live0action with experimental, drawing, painting and animation. Patrick Bokanowski challenges our everyday thoughts and feelings about realities. I also admire his act practice in film frames. He artificially change betweens that create different visual language to make conversation with audience.
Recently I am watching shorts animation within 2 mins, Raimund Krumme is one of the most imppressive animator. His idea are very simple but with his visualization they are shown in a humorous way. “The success of Krumme’s work stems from his ability to merge the personal and the universal in a playful environment. ” (Robinson, 2005)
He always simplify his character with lines bold colors, but movements are so vivid. He used explain his aim : “he not only want to keep the character simple using basic geometric shapes, but he also wanted their design to reflect the vert ordered and rational behavior of the character”(1993)
I really enjoy watching his animation, because they are very short and clear, easy to know what he want to say, but not in a usual perspective at all. But, in some way, I question about if his style are too single.
I am going to make morph drawing in next two weeks, which will link my lip sync character to Sabrina’s, I haven’t seen her first images, but I did some research about Peter Foldes’s work. The value of his work more than this point, and also include concept, logicals, and reflection of social issue.
The drawings below, I can tell he had very powerful ability to describe and analyze lines and shapes, very clear logical as well. It is very useful for me to think about his work and skills, since all of these animate skill, are not only for simply make up the film, but also as personal language of storytelling, and that is most important part.
I like this short animation, I am not sure how it was made, I guess it mixed stop motion , cut out and 2D drawing. I particular enjoy the music, which working really well with the humour. The film is made up with nice Illustration, I really enjoy this storytelling.
